Anyone else notice that the more McCafee and norton bloat their software the harder it is to install a device on it?

I mean its all nice that they left port 9100 open for us but to block SMB / FTP / SMTP on a normal network is just plain stupid.

I can see trying to protect grandma and the little sister with an arts agree against the bad things in life but everyday people pay for their software that use these features every day as well. A business person is just as likely or even more so to order 5 dells for his office on the holiday season as grandma is. Why install all the bloat ware? To hook up a printer, why do I have to edit the config files for their "Virus" protection? These are common protocols with built in authentication?

I kinda like the way microsoft did it.

Do you want to share your files and or printers? (Yes) I can turn it on or off.
Do you want a password? (Yes) I can assign one.

My bitch is when it takes me a half hour to dig around in their anti virus "Suite" to turn the crap off so their new $20,000 printer will work with their "new" dell with a subscription to norton that will expire in 3 months any way.

WTF are they thinking. This is a hardware problem and not a software solution. If you wish to block a port, stop it at the router and not the computer. That is what the damn thing is designed for. Buy a brand new "Fast" PC and then load it up with bloat that should be handled on the network before it ever gets to the PC.

There might be a open port, lets install norton. So now office opens at a crawl as it scans all the files for a virus. the firewall checks every port. You spent a $100 bill on the router for a reason, use it. Throw the crap software that costs you hundreds per week in labor waiting for applications to load away and pay attention to the point of entry.

Your router.

Lost, you are SO correct in this matter. These "Internet Security Suites" are a joke. I'm losing count on the machines I've had to fix for the Fake Windows security shit that seems to pass though the high dollar anti virus shit. Combine that and as you said, the agony of installing devices and the Bendex brake job it puts on your system, it's just not worth it. I could go on about this but I already have a headache. :pat:

The fake windows security is a pain in the ass.

I fell for that one as well though. Microsoft security essentails never even flagged it or gave a warning either.

I used to love AVG when it was a simple little virus scanner that worked for the most part but even it has bloated to the point with pop-ups, notifications it is almost as bad as the major players in the market.

I just want a small footprint virus scanner that works. I can understand the virus aspect of it as many people are fooled by emails / bad websites.

Its the bloat with mcCafee and norton that is cumbersom at best. blocking common used ports. Maybe they make money off support? I :dunno:

Try Panda Cloud. It has a very small footprint and works pretty well. http://filehippo.com...loud_antivirus/

late to the party
YES hate McAfee Norton (same company)
every update and MFP scanners will not work and customers will not listen and nor with thoer I.T. people

and to save my soul there is no place in the newest versions to write a exception for a IP address to allow (exception to blocking)

AVG, I have had good luck with
I personally purchased the full version and it is NO GOOD it is the bloatware version,,, the free one seems to still be OK

if the computer does not work because the protection is disabling the function then the protection software in as bad as the virus we are trying to keep out.

and at the cost of anti-virus software, I think a better redundant backup system is the answer like Carbonite.

--------------------------
working with the customers own computer tech is often the problem

I hate the call the computer guy just reloaded my machine and the image scanner MFP will not work
you show up and they want to see you add the user name in the MFP, when the user authorization is IN THE COMPUTER
they cannot understand and often the Computer guy tells them this.

Norton is a virus

ever try to remove Norton

like malaria once you have it you are always infected -- always finding bits of it still clinging to files
