Machine is an office in hospital doing about 2k per month between faxes and copies. The machine was set up Sept 2. It was moved to adjoining office a month ago and on Jan 7 machine had an E1-00 error code. Fax board was blown. I replace board with new one and okay for now. While waiting for board i gave customer a Sharp AL-1661CS as a loaner. The next day customer called and said they could receive but not send and machine would not respond to numbers attempted to be entered. They said they would wait until Fo2080 was returned as they did not send much but primarily received.
When I returned Fo-2080 I noticed that the Al-1661cs was plugged into a splitter that plugged into wall jack. A phone from anothe dest was plugged into other side of splitter. The phone unit has 3 lines that jump when one is busy. This did not seem like an appropriate hookup and I explained my concern to one of the staff and said I thought they should have a dedicated line for faxing. I was told other machines they had were hooked up same way without a problem. I had 2 machines plugged into that splitter and a problem on each machine so I am wary.
When I returned to my office with the loaner I immediately plugged it in and hooked up the fax. I got a dial tone and the machine responded to numbers entered. I did not get dial tone at hospital and of course you could not enter numbers. For some reason I guess the FO2080 works in that environment but I am afraid that maybe that type of hookup may have been responsible for the fax board blowing.
I know this is a long story but I wanted you to have all the facts so you could make a comment of what you think of this situation. Your response is very much appreciated as I am hardly an expert no fax connections. I just try to fix the machines. Frank/ActionPhotocopy

I do work on sharps, but only rarely sell them if 11x17 cheap
I never felt Sharp's connectivity was all that good -- often firmware problem in capability

they are OK as low cost copiers and if they connect GREAT if not then it is what it is

They are not HP driver happy machines
with so many other brands you can not even change driver from the old HP and they work fine
I just Friday I delivered a new Samsung ML3741DN printer and left the HP2200DN driver in place and used it on the Samsung.

---------------------------------------------
that being said
RE FAX problem
it sounds like you have a

bad - WRONG type Phone line

fax should only be on a TRUE and DEDICATED ANALOG telephone line

VOIP
DSL
and even some T-1 phone lines are a problem

wiring needs to be direct to the fax no splices 1
many older buildings have moved phone lines over and over thus spliced and spliced (daisy chain stile)

if the above things are not corrected then will always have problems -- you may make them better with DSL filters, slow fax speed to slowest possible (if the machine offerers it) and turn off ECM (error correction mode)

the test is take the machine to a know good location (your shop) and test it extensively,, if it works and then the problem is not the machine

another good question is ask them "how often does your INTERNET lockup,?" if it does I bet it is the same time the fax will not work
reboot computer and DSL modem and fax see if the problem goes away .....

NOTE if you ask the customer about VOIP, DSL they will almost always not know, do not depend on asking them

ask well telephone company and independent phone techs will never know and thus deny that is the problem
you need to be confident and firm about the problem and all of your people if more than you need to be united on this

if one of your techs tell the customer is is the machine, you will NEVER solved the problem
My old - tech told customer it was main board on a SCX6320F
So I swapped out brand new machine same problem ,,, yep tech told customer it was main board again, in the mean time the first machine went out to new customer and never had problem again.
I ended up pay $400.00 to outside phone company to rewire the fax line,,, they never had the problem again.

another problem can occur if they have a second fax on the same line.

as well make sure the telephone patch line (from wall to machine) is only two wire (center two) 4 wire can create back ground noise

-------------------------------

AND side note some brands are more troublesome to the problem than others

a TRUE MURATEC made machine like the F320 etc may never (noticeably) have the same problem on the bad phone line. But it is the phone line I bet 98% of the time.

CUSTOMERS LIE
customer not only lie, but are not know to do a good documentation of problems nor communicate well inside their own operation let alone with repairman

I had customer having the problem on a T-1 Line and they said it was never a problem in any other way
I was set back, until that afternoon their outside computer tech came by my shop for a repair on another customers printer,, and he was telling me how much problem a customers INTERNET was giving him on a T1 line,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Guess what he was there upstairs the same time I was there and having problems all related to T1 line... But customer swore there was never other problems.
